Just the Right Tank

Betta fish are famous for being able to live in a relatively small tank. Bettas are the only fish that can be kept in a bowl! Keep in mind, however, that your betta fish needs room to "live". Meaning: it needs to be able to move around easily, comfortably and happily.
Betta fish need access to the top of the water. They also require a steady water temperature. Heaters are advised for tanks larger than 2 gallons. Some sort of aeration is required, so, creating a good habitat for your betta fish means you need a decently large aquarium.

Should Betta Fish Live in a Vase?

Some pet stores sell betta fish in vases with a pretty flower arrangement at the top. Contrary to what the sales person might tell you, this is NOT a good environment for your little betta fish. The arrangement of flowers usually blocks food from entering the vase and prevents the betta fish from getting its proper access to the top. All in all, a vase is not the ideal place for any fish. Bettas deserve better.
